A GREEK TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF A BOY

PTOLEMAIC PERIOD, CIRCA 3RD CENTURY B.C.

Notes

Children were one of the most common subjects during the Hellenistic period.  This example, likely from Egypt, depicts a boy, perhaps the god Harpokrates.  He is depicted nude but for a narrow himation worn diagonally over his left shoulder.  In his left hand he supports a large jar.

For a related figure, seated, likewise wearing a narrow himation and holding a jar of similar form, see no. EA20727 in the British Museum.
